Frequently asked questions

Who is the Find Your Calm course suitable for? Who is it aimed at?

The Find Your Calm course is aimed at anyone who wants to learn how to relax or ways to manage anxiety. It is best suited for people who are prepared to put the work in themselves and are looking for tools and techniques to help manage their mental and emotional health: mind, emotions and thoughts.

The course is not suitable for anyone looking for a 'quick fix', or who is not prepared to accept some responsibility for their own state of mind, actions or levels of stress and anxiety.

What will I learn?

The course is broken down into 6 lessons, the first one explains a simple exercise to learn how to relax and calm your mind. Lesson 2 explains how to cope with excessive thinking. Lesson 3 moves onto emotions and gives a practical exercise for containing and expressing emotions in a safe way. Lesson 4 introduces a guided visualisation to discover your own personal calm place and Lesson 5 looks at ways to manage anxiety. The final Lesson 6 brings music, relaxation and visualisation together into a powerful combination and also talks through the Calming Down model for improving your own mental and emotional health.

The aims are to give participants a range of techniques for calming the mind and learning how to relax, so that you can find the tools and exercises that work best for you. It is a beginner's course and no previous experience is needed in yoga, meditation or relaxation.

Do I need any previous experience in yoga? I have never done anything like this before.

You do not need any prior experience at all to benefit from this course.

You do not need to be able to stand on your head, do the splits, or be physically flexible in any way at all! Openness of mind, your attention, and your willingness to try out the techniques explained are all that are required to learn to relax.

Is there any scientific evidence behind this?

There are numerous studies showing the benefits of a short, regular relaxation or meditation. Here are a few to have a look at:

One research study (*1) has shown that 5 minutes relaxation per day for 7 days can have a significant beneficial impact by decreasing stress, increasing self compassion and feelings of positivity, and potential to enhance performance at work.

Another study (*2) concludes that a regular relaxation meditation can improve how your heart functions, lower blood pressure, improve your outlook on life and could help protect against heart disease.

And this study (*3) by Trinity College, Dublin looked at the benefits of meditation and breathing exercises to sharpen your mind and think more clearly.

How long should I leave it between different lessons? I am keen to do this course and a part of me wants to watch them all back to back!

I would suggest leaving at least a few days between each lesson. In this way you will get the most from the course. In my experience, each lesson takes a bit of time to 'digest' and you may also want to practise some of the exercises and techniques. By doing this work in between the lessons, you will be laying a good foundation and then ready for the next lesson which will fit onto the knowledge from the previous lessons.

Can I download a product from the shop once I have purchased it?

It depends. You cannot download any of the video courses, they are available when you sign into the website from any device, under Your Products.
You can download any of the digital download products and store them on any device for when you need them.

Do I need headphones?

They may be useful for the guided relaxation part of the course - in fact by using headphones for these parts you will probably get most out of it, although they are not necessary. What is more important is your concentration, a quiet space, and then time to practice the individual exercises between lessons.

Are there any contraindications to the course - anyone who should not do it?

Yes, if you have a diagnosed serious mental health condition, or recent serious trauma, then seek advice from your own doctor, therapist or psychiatrist before you do the course.

The material here is presented for educational purposes only to help you with your mental and emotional health - I am not your own personal therapist, you must only proceed taking responsibility for your own well being. For more information on this, please read the disclaimer.

What is the best way to practise the 'guided relaxation' part of the course? Do I do it watching my computer or phone?

Up to you - whatever works. You may want to watch the video through first and practise a 'lighter' version of the relaxations seated in front of your PC or phone. If this feels OK, you can always repeat the video but this time find somewhere to lie down and put the laptop or phone near you so you can hear my voice guiding you through the practice. Even better if you have headphones as it will help cut out any background sounds.

Why do I need to create an account on the website in order to checkout? Why does it need 2 factor verification?

I use a course hosting company called Podia to help manage the website. They set up all the processes for purchase and they need all customers to create an account so you can log back in at any time and access the products that you have purchased. As a part of this, they may ask for 2 factor verification if you need to change your password which should be quite straightforward.

I have signed up for a product but have not had an email?

When you sign up for a product, you should get an automated email confirming what you have ordered and how to access it. If you have not got this within a reasonable time of placing the order, please check you spam folder as often automated emails go there by mistake.

If you still can't find any email, please do let me know and I will investigate. Email me on:  calmingdownuk @ gmail.com

I have a problem with an order / the shop / the checkout, what do I do?

Please contact me on:  calmingdownuk @ gmail.com
If you received an automated email after a purchase that is phrased in American English ("Hey there....") this is simply due to the fact that the hosting company is American I can't edit the text they use!
